Arelatense / Arles

Provincial Council in Arles; June 28, 554

The provincial council of Arles assembled under the leadership of Bishop Sapaudus of Arles in June 554. It concluded its business on June 28. Eleven bishops and eight clerical delegates were in attendance, representing the Frankish sub-regnaof Childebert I (r. 511-558), Chlothar I (r. 511-561), and Theudebald (r. 547-555). The council issued seven canons addressing a variety of issues including: the expectation that suffragan churches follow the liturgical example of the diocese of Arles in the reception of oblatae (c. 1), episcopal responsibility for diocesan monasteries and monastic discipline (cc. 2-3 and 5), the necessity of presbyters securing episcopal approval before attempting to depose a deacon or subdeacon (c. 4), the degradation of ecclesiastical property held by clerics in usufructus (c. 6), and the improper promotion by bishops of clerics from other dioceses (c. 7).

The full acts were preserved in the sixth-century Collectio Lugdunensis, subsequently utilized by the compiler of the systematic Vetus Gallica in the Early Seventh Century, which included cc. 2, 4, 5, and 7. The derivative ninth-century Collectio Bonaevallensis I incorporated cc. 2, 4, and 5. Gratian included c. 2 in his Decretum.
