Parisiense / Paris
Interprovincial Council in Paris; 573
The Council of Paris assembled in 573 on the order of King Guntram of Burgundy and ostensibly King Sigibert I of Reims. The council had been convoked on the basis of a petition by Bishop Pappolus of Chartres to Guntram. Prior to the council’s assembly, Sigibert, with the cooperation of Bishop Egidius of Reims, had sponsored the episcopal ordination of the presbyter Promotus as bishop of Châteaudun, as part of an effort by Sigibert to strengthen his position within the civitas of Chartres. The council – consisting of thirty-two bishops, including six metropolitans, as well as one presbyter, all from Guntram’s regnum – met in the Basilica of St. Peter in Paris and ordered the deposition of Promotus, concluding its business on 11 September. The deposition was delayed, however, until after Sigibert’s death in 575.
The council issued two epistles, to Sigibert and Egidius respectively, and also received an epistle from Pappolus of Chartres that has been preserved alongside the other two letters. Pappolus’s epistle takes the form of a petitio to the assembled bishops, requesting the removal of the administrative authority and ecclesiastical property claimed by Promotus. The subsequent letter to Egidius castigates the metropolitan bishop for wrongly consecrating a bishop whose diocese was not even located in Egidius’s province, and announces the decision to depose Promotus. The epistle to Sigibert is more conciliatory in tone, not only crediting the king with supporting the council’s assembly, which he almost certainly had not, but also requesting his assistance in enforcing the bishops’ ruling. The three epistles are preserved in the Collectio Corbeiensis.
