Aurelianense II / Orléans II

Aurelianense II / Orléans II

Interprovincial Council in Orléans; 533

The Second Council of Orléans (533) is the first attested Frankish council following the First Council of Orléans (511). The council of 533 was convoked on the order of (“cum ex praeceptione”) the sons of King Clovis I, the royal convoker of the council of 511. Although prelates from the sub-kingdoms of Chlothar I, Theuderic I, and Childebert I attended – representing over half-a-dozen ecclesiastical provinces – Orléans itself was located within Childebert’s regnum, and the conciliar acts were dated according to his regnal years. In all, twenty-six prelates (including five metropolitan bishops) and five presbyters were in attendance, with Bishop Honoratus of Bourges presiding over the meeting. Among the metropolitan bishops at the council was Iulianus of Vienne, whose see would be included in the formal absorption of Burgundian territories into the regnum Francorum the following year (534). The council produced twenty-one canons, and concluded its business on June 23rd.

The canons produced by the council addressed a variety of issues, including several specifically concerned with the behavior of laypersons. The council, for instance, prohibited marrying one’s own stepmother (c. 10) as well as disturbing church prayers through boisterous behavior (c. 12). The council additionally proscribed oblations for the dead in the case of suicides (c. 15), marriages between Christians and Jews (c. 19), and the resumption of idol worship (c. 20). The council’s long-term influence was limited in comparison to that of similarly large Frankish councils of the first half of the sixth century. The canons only were preserved in two chronological collections, the Collectio Sancti Amandi (late-seventh/early-eighth century) and the related Collectio Bellovacensis (ninth century), and in one systematic collection, the Collectio Bonaevallensis prima (ninth century; four canons).
