Armachanum / Armagh

Provinzialkonzil; 1475 (16. März)

A provincial council was held on 16 March during a vacancy in the archiepiscopal see, after which the dean and chapter sent a letter to King Edward IV, asking him for help in disciplining William Sherwood, whom the council had excommunicated on the ground that his claim to the see of Meath was invalid. This was a highly political act, given that Sherwood was appointed deputy lieutenant of Ireland in April 1475 and this letter was clearly an attempt to stop that from happening. It failed in its purpose, and relations between the king’s government and the church of Armagh remained strained.
