Sydneiense (Australasiae) / Sydney (Australien)

Provincial Council; 1844 (10th - 12th September)

The Australian hierarchy was established in 1842. The first Archbishop of Sydney, John Bede Polding, summoned his two suffragan bishops (Bishops Robert William Wilson [Hobart], Francis Murphy [Adelaide]) to a provincial council with the aims of correct and uniform discipline in the province, Mass and the sacraments being celebrated worthily, the faithful being correctly instructed and guided, unbelievers led to the faith, and abuses corrected. The council was celebrated in Sydney from 10 until 12 September 1844. Most of the priests of the immense area were summoned and many were present. The bulk of the legislation concerned the administration of the sacraments in the context of the missionary reality, and was a firm foundation on which later conciliar legislation was built.
