IV Provincial Council; 1883 (23rd - 30th September)

 

Cardinal John McCloskey, from 1864 Archbishop John Hughes of New York held this fourth Provincial Council at New York in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Fifth Avenue, New York, with his suffragan bishops (Francis McNeirny [Albany], Stephen Ryan [Buffalo], John Loughlin [Brooklyn], Winand Wigger [Newark], Edgar Wadhams [Ogdensburg], Bernard John McQuaid [Rochester], Michael O’Farrell [Trenton] and John Conroy [emeritus of Albany and Titular Bishop of Curium]).

     Five decrees were issues: (1) emphasized the sanctity and importance of marriage, forbidding of marriage by priests of other denominations; (2) emphasized the duty of parents to send their children to Catholic schools; (3) and also the duty of every family to have Catholic newspapers in their home; (4) Forbade Catholics from membership in any society which demands obedience by chiefs of other organizations; (5) recommended that Catholics always have a Requiem mass at funerals, forbid sale of liquor on Sundays or to children, stated that pastors should not run into debt for church building, and forbid picnics or excursions for church purposes or on Sundays or after dark.
