Neo Eboracense / New York

I Provincial Council; 1854 (1st - 7th October)

 

Archbishop John Hughes of New York held this first Provincial Council at New York in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Mott Street (now the Basilica of Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral), with his suffragan bishops (John McCloskey [Albany], John Timon [Buffalo], John Bernard Fitzpatrick [Boston], Bernard O’Reilly [Hartford], Louis de Goesbrind [Burlington], John Loughlin [Brooklyn] and James Roosevelt Bayley [Newark]) as well as the Very Rev. Clement Boulanger, Superior of the Canada and New York Missions of the Society of Jesus and Fr. Hembrecht, Rector of the Redemptorists.

     Six decrees were issued: (1) profession of the obedience of the prelates to the Holy See; (2) put the decrees of the first seven provincial councils of Baltimore into laws of the Province; (3) forbade priests to mortgage church property without the permission of the bishop; (4) urged the erection of church schools; (5) warned clergy against exercising their ministry in other dioceses without permission of the bishop; (6) encouraged erection of parochial residences adjacent to the church wherever possible, with title vested in the bishop.
