Provinzialkonzil; 1489 (6. Juli)
Summoned to deal with the situation of Mellifont Abbey, which had suffered from financial demands made on it by the secular authorities, it met on 6 July with an exceptionally high rate of attendance. The bishops of Meath, Clogher, Dromore, Derry, Raphoe, Ardagh, Kilmore and Clonmacnoise were all present. The council also dealt with a dispute over the bishopric of Kilmore between Cormac MacShamhradhain (1476-1512) and Thomas mac Aindriais Mac Brádaigh (1480-1511). It appears that Thomas was provided to the see because of some difficulty with Cormac, though what that was is unknown. Cormac did, however, represent the O’Rorke clan and Thomas the O’Rileys, so it may have been a tribal dispute that caused the problem. In any case, it appears that Thomas was the bishop officially recognized at the opening of this council, but the dispute was resolved by allowing both claimants to share the see, which they did until Thomas’ death in 1511. Both men were recognized as bishops of Kilmore at subsequent synods, so the arrangement, though very odd, seems to have worked quite well.
