Armachanum / Armagh

Provinzialkonzil; 1460 (14. Juni)

Summoned by archbishop Octavian to meet on 14 June, probably at Drogheda, though the location is not specified. Much of the business was taken up with censuring the bishops of Raphoe and Derry, who failed to appear, and the correspondence dealing with this has survived. The council also enacted eight canons, dealing with a variety of matters, including the illegal seizure of church property and the removal of items from churches without proper authorization. The clergy were also ordered to shave their beards and the archbishop claimed the right to interpret all past and future canons as he saw fit. The last of the canons instituted the feast of Corpus Christi, which was growing in popularity across Europe at that time.
