Concilium Modogarnomense (Burdegalense)
Council of Saint-Pierre-de-Granon (Bordeaux); ca. 673–675
The council of Saint-Pierre-de-Grannon (Concilium Modogarnomense), sometimes referred to as the Council of Bordeaux, was convoked by King Childeric II (r. 662–675) during the relatively brief period when Childeric assumed control of the Neustro-Burgundian regnum (673-675). Sixteen bishops attended along with two abbates, collectively representing three Aquitanian provinces: Novempopulana (9), Aquitanica Secunda (5), and Aquitanica Prima (4). The metropolitans of all three provinces were in attendance, with Ado of Bourges subscribing first to the acta even though the council did not assemble within his province. The council’s acts state that the bishops met out of concern for the state of the church and the stability of the kingdom (pro statu aecclesiae uel stabilitatem regni), a formula that parallels language found in contemporary monastic exemption charters. The acts note the order (iussio) of the king, as communicated to the Aquitanian dux Lupus, that the council’s decisions be enforced in their entirety. While Lupus’s own presence at the council has been hypothesized based on the text of the acts, there is not strong evidence to suggest that Lupus either was present or enjoyed any unusual degree of influence over the meeting.
The council issued only four canons. These canons required clerics to wear the habit and not bear arms (c. 1), forbade clerics from seeking lay patronage or protection without episcopal approval (c. 2), prohibited members of sacred orders from cohabitating with women who were not approved relations (c. 3), and declared that bishops should serve as models for clerics and the faithful and avoid any suggestion of secularization (c. 4). Immediately prior to the episcopal subscriptions is an additional statement that monks should comport themselves according to the standards of the holy fathers. The acts –along with those of the Council of Saint-Jean-de-Losne– are preserved in a single late ninth- or tenth-century manuscript: Albi, BM 2 (147).
