Concilium Leudegarii episcopi Augustodunensis / Concilium Augustodunense
Council of Leudegar of Autun/Council of Autun; ca. 662–675
Contained within the seventh-century systematic canonical collection known as the Vetus Gallica are half-a-dozen canons credited to a council of unknown size held under the auspices of Bishop Leudegar of Autun. According to an attribution statement, the canons were agreed to collectively by Leudegar and his colleagues (cum consensu fratrum meorum). While the council usually is assumed to have been a diocesan synod held in the civitas of Autun itself, the fragmentary acts as we have them do not state this explicitly. Assuming the accuracy of the attribution, the council would have been held during Leudegar’s episcopacy (ca. 662-675), although ca. 670 has been proposed as a more approximate date of assembly.
Although the Vetus Gallica in its so-called Autun recension contains only six canons credited to the Concilium Leudegarii, the numbering of these canons suggests that the original acts contained a minimum of fifteen canons. A textual variant (found in Venezia, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Lat. XIV. 232 [4257], no. 51), however, suggests a different original numbering and organization. The majority of the preserved canons concern monastic life and discipline, most famously canon fifteen, which requires abbots and monks to observe in omnibus that which is prescribed by the canonum ordo vel regula sancti Benedicti. In addition, canon one requires of clerics that they be able to recite without fault the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed.
Besides the Vetus Gallica itself, the canons also appear in the derivative Collectio Herovalliana. Canon ten is included in the ninth-century Collectio Bonaevallensis prima, while the Decreta of Burchard of Worms and Ivo of Chartres both include canon five.
