Autissiodorense / Auxerre

Autissiodorense / Auxerre

Diocesan Synod in Auxerre; ca. 561-605

The diocesan synod of Auxerre assembled in the civitas of Auxerre sometime during the late-sixth or early-seventh century. While the synod can be conservatively dated to the episcopal tenure of its convoker, Aunacharius (ca. 561-605, although the precise dates have been disputed), the acts’ apparent reliance on canons issued at the Council of Mâcon (585) would seem to suggest an assembly date after 585. Along with the diocesan bishop, thirty-four presbyters, three deacons, and seven abbots were in attendance. Among the participants, Abbot Vinobaudus of Saint-Germain d’Auxerre was the second to subscribe to the acts following the bishop himself.

The acts as preserved contain no praefatio, but only forty-five relatively terse canons followed by subscriptions. The canons, among other issues, condemn superstitious customs (cc. 1, 3, 4, and 5), dictate liturgical practices and issues of ecclesiastical decorum (2, 6, 8-13, 18-19, 36-37, and 42), mandate proper burial practices (cc. 14-15), and require the holding annual diocesan synods for presbyters as well as for abbots (c. 7). Also extensively addressed are issues related to sexual and marital relations (cc. 20-22, 24, and 26-32).

The council’s canons were preserved in the Collectio Sancti Amandi, the related Collectio Bellovacensis, and in the unstructured Collectio Burgundiana. Burchard of Worms included four canons (cc. 10, 12, 17, and 26) in his Decretum. Ivo of Chartres included the same four canons along with c. 25 in his own Decretum, also including c. 10 in his Tripartitaand cc. 10 and 25 in his Panormia. Gratian subsequently took up cc. 10 and 25.
