Lugdunense / Lyon

Interprovincial Council in Lyon; 583

The Council of Lyon, which assembled in May 583, was a small interdisciplinary council held in the Frankish regnum of King Guntram of Burgundy (r. 561-592). The council’s attendance was comprised of eight prelates representing the ecclesiastical provinces of Lyon (four), Vienne (three), and Sens (one), as well as twelve anonymous clerical representatives. Presumably the two metropolitan bishops present, Priscus of Lyon and Evantius of Vienne, took the lead in directing the council’s proceedings. The attending bishops were among the most active participants in the frequent councils held in Guntram’s kingdom. The council’s acts, devoid of a customary preface, make no explicit reference to a royal convocation. The acts, as preserved, contain only six canons.

The canons address several disparate issues: the cohabitation of clerics with unapproved women (c. 1), the redemption of prisoners by bishops (c. 2), nuns who violate their monastic vows (c. 3), incestuous marriages (c. 4), the necessary celebration of Christmas and Easter by bishops within their own churches (c. 5), and the dependency of lepers on their diocesan bishops for charity (c. 6). A single canon (c. 6) was included in the systematic Merovingian-era canonical collection known as the Vetus Gallica, while the unstructured Collectio Burgundiana (early eighth century) included canon five. The collective acts, however, survive only in the form of a sixteenth-century transcription by Laurentius Surius.
