Concilium incerti loci
Council of an Uncertain Location; post 614
Very little is known of this council, whose fifteen fragmentary canons are preserved solely in the Collectio Remensis as part of a seventh-century addition to that collection. What can be said for certain is that the council assembled following the Council of Paris (614), which is referred to explicitly – along with the subsequent edictum of Chlothar II – in the surviving canons. The Fredegar Chronicle reports that ca. 616 Chlothar held an assembly of the Burgundian nobility and bishops at his villa at Bonneuil. While it has been hypothesized that it was on this occasion that these canons were promulgated, there is no particularly compelling evidence to indicate this. The canons lack a standard praefatio, dating clause, and episcopal subscriptions.
The canons – several of which cannot be deciphered partly or in their entirety (i.e. cc. 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, and 15) – touch upon a number of issues including: a confirmation of those constitutiones issued in Paris in 614 by the bishops and by Chlothar (c. 1), the consecration of ecclesiastical altars (c. 2), monastic life and the performance of rites within monasteries (cc. 5-6), clerical cohabitation with women other than close relations (c. 8), asylum rights (c. 9), the improper appointment and/or removal of abbots and archpriests (c. 11), a ban on presbyters or deacons marrying (c. 12), the public announcement of excommunications (c. 13), and free persons (ingenui) who have voluntarily sold or pledged themselves in exchange for a loan of money (c. 14).
