Provinzialkonzil (Prov. Dublin); zwischen 1317 und 1325
Sometime between 1317 and 1325 a Dublin provincial synod was held at Kilkenny, that published fourteen canons, later supplemented by two more. Not only do they reflect contemporary English canonical legislation, but they also tap into Roman canon law, which was in full flower at that time. The first canon is an invocation of faith in the Trinity, a standard opening in canonical collections of the time, and this is followed by a series of measures dealing with well-worn topics like the non-residence of the clergy, clerical concubinage, the abuse of the tithe system, clandestine marriages and disorderly conduct on church premises. The canons stand out for their copious references to the Bible (and even one to the Qur’an) and for the provision that they should be read out annually, so that nobody could claim to be ignorant of them. It is possible that this last provision was taken from the canons of the papal legate Othobon (1268), which he delivered to the province of Canterbury.
