Provinzialkonzil; 1186 (23.-25. März)
A synod presided over by the archbishop of Dublin, was held from 23-25 March in order to deal with conflicts that had arisen between the Irish and the Anglo-Norman clergy, and to discipline the latter, who had apparently been taking concubines from among the local women. We have a detailed account of the proceedings from Giraldus Cambrensis, who was present and who preached a sermon that he has preserved for us. The synod passed thirteen canons that have survived because they were sent to Rome for ratification by the pope. For the first time in Ireland, this synod dealt with detailed liturgical matters. It was forbidden to celebrate the eucharist on a wooden table, which had been the custom up to that time and prescribed what the priest must wear during the celebration. The second canon stipulated the correct position of the baptismal font, and the third regulated burials in the churchyard, that had to be overseen by a priest. The remaining canons are to a large extent applications of universal principles to the Irish church, private chapels could not be used to circumvent the duty of parishioners to attend worship in their parish church, and several others govern the appointment and behaviour of the clergy. The final canons order fornicators to marry, forbid the ordination of illegitimate children, compel the laity to pay tithes and censure soldiers who abuse their calling by indulging in extortion, rape, and pillage.
