Irish National Council; 1170
A national council was held at the instigation of King Henry II to investigate the enslavement of Englishmen either by Irish raiders or by voluntary sale by other Englishmen, and to secure their release. It was presided over by Gilla meic Liac (Gelasius), the archbishop of Armagh, who wanted to unite his province behind a common approach to the Anglo-Normans as they invaded Ireland. The outcome of the synod is not known, but in any case it was soon superseded by a national council held at Cashel in 1172.
