I Provincial Council; 1907 (17th - 24th November)

Archbishop Thomas Carr of Melbourne and his three suffragan bishops (Stephen Reville OSA [Sandhurst], James Francis Corbett [Sale], Joseph Higgins [Ballarat]) held a council in Melbourne during 17-24 November 1907, assisted by twenty-three priests. They legislated 112 decrees (51 dealing with the sacraments), making specific to the province of Melbourne the national legislation of 1885-1895-1905. The aim was to provide one harmonious body of provincial laws in place of divergent decrees from diocesan synods in the most geographically compact of the Australian provinces where there was easy interaction between dioceses. A projected provincial council for 1910 was never eventuated.
