I Provincial Council; 1899 (21st - 29th January)

This council was held in Wellington, New Zealand from 21 until 29 January 1899, by Archbishop Francis Redwood of Wellington and his three suffragan bishops (John Joseph Grimes SM [Christchurch], Michael Verdon [Dunedin], George Michael Lenihan [Auckland]). They were assisted by thirteen priests. They adopted practically verbatim as legislation for New Zealand the 1885 Australasian legislation as augmented in Australia in 1895, with some additional legislation about the need for parochial libraries and books, and fuller legislation about the provincial seminary. No other council has ever been held in New Zealand.
