Sydneiense (Australiense) / Sydney (Australien)

III Plenary Council; 1905 (2nd - 10th September)

Held in Sydney from 2 until 10 September 1905, under the presidency of Cardinal Patrick Moran, the council further augmented the 1885-1895 legislation, with decrees about education, works of charity, and avoiding danger to the faith. The twenty-one council fathers (Archbishops Thomas Joseph Carr [Melbourne], Robert Dunne [Brisbane], John O’Reily [Adelaide], Michael Kelly [tit. abp Achrida, coadjutor Sydney]; Bishops James Murray [Maitland], Stephen Reville OSA [Sandhurst], Matthew Gibney [Perth], John Dunne [Wilcannia], James Francis Corbett [Sale], Jeremiah Joseph Doyle [Lismore], Joseph Higgins [Ballarat], Patrick Delany [tit. bp Laranda, coadjutor and procurator Hobart], John Gallagher [Goulburn], Patrick Vincent Dwyer [tit. bp Zoara, coadjutor Maitland], James Dominic Murray OSA [tit. bp Issus, vicar apostolic Cooktown], William Bernard Kelly [Geraldton], John Mary Dunne [Bathurst], Patrick Joseph O’Connor [Armidale]; Abbot Nullius Fulgentius Torres OSB [New Norcia]; Revv. William Mason Walsh [diocesan administrator Rockhampton], John Henry Norton [procurator Port Augusta], Laurence Smyth [procurator Perth for some sessions]) were assisted by forty-nine priests. The Council legislated that the metropolitan see of Sydney be granted primatial status. This decree was removed by the Holy See. Cardinal Moran was advised that some other decrees were properly petitions to be directed to the Pope. When this was done, most were unsuccessful.
