Melburnense (Australiense) / Melbourne (Australien)

II Provincial Council; 1869 (18th - 25th November)

Archbishop Polding of Sydney convoked and presided over the second provincial council from 18 until 25 April 1869 in Melbourne. The number of suffragan dioceses had increased to ten. Seven of the bishops were present (Daniel Murphy (Hobart), James Alipius Goold osa (Melbourne), James Quinn (Brisbane), Matthew Quinn (Bathurst), James Murray (Maitland), Laurence Bonaventure Sheil ofm (Adelaide), William Lanigan (Goulburn); Rev. Samuel John Augustine Sheehy osb (diocesan administrator Armidale) with the administrator of a vacant diocese; two other bishops were impeded; and twenty-nine priests assisted. The legislation reflected concerns associated with an expanding population due to immigration and affluence from gold-rushes, namely Catholic education, mixed marriages, the indigenous people, and the need for new dioceses.
