Sydneiense (Australasiae) / Sydney (Australien)

I Plenary Council; 1885 (14th - 29th November)

In 1874, the original province of Sydney was divided, with Melbourne becoming the second metropolitan see. Therefore, the next council, held in Sydney from 14 until 29 November 1885, was plenary as it embraced both provinces; and as the Holy See directed the bishops of the three dioceses then existing in neighboring New Zealand to participate, the title Australasia rather than Australia was used. The Council of eighteen prelates (Bishops Daniel Murphy [Hobart], Rudesindo Salvado OSB [Port Victoria, and abbot nullius of New Norcia], Patrick Moran [Dunedin], James Murray [Maitland], William Lanigan [Goulburn], Martin Griver [Perth], Christopher Augustine Reynolds [Adelaide], Francis Mary Redwood SM [Wellington], Elzear Torreggiani OFMCap [Armidale], John Cani [Rockhampton], Robert Dunne [Brisbane], John Edmund Luck OSB [Auckland], James Moore [Ballarat], Stephen Reville OSA [tit. bp Ceram, coadjutor & procurator Sandhurst], Joseph Patrick Byrne [Bathurst]; Revv. John Hutchinson OSA [pro-vicar apostolic Queensland], Joseph Patrick Slattery [procurator Melbourne]), presided over by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Patrick Moran, deliberated on every aspect of ecclesiastical life and produced 274 decrees. Much of the legislation was sourced from the plenary councils of Maynooth. Fifty-two priests assisted with consultative votes.
